Health
care is a priority in Restigouche. A competent work force
and several installations are dedicated to this important
issue.
Health
care in the area includes: public health services, medical
specialists, general practitioners, dentists and optometrists.
Hospitals
The region has three hospitals:
Campbellton
Regional Hospital houses "state of the art"
equipment and sophisticated technology. Operating in both
official languages, the hospital offers 162 beds and a team
of professionals dedicated to offering a wide array of medical
services.
St-Joseph
Hospital in Dalhousie serves the Eastern portion of
the county. Forty-two beds are available to the population.
The medical staff offers a variety of medical services.
Hôtel
Dieu St-Joseph of Saint-Quentin is an emergency hospital
serving the Western portion of the county. Specialists make
regular visits to this community hospital.
The
Restigouche Hospital Center, based
in Campbellton, offers tertiary psychiatric services as
well as psychiatric and psycholegal evaluations. The RHC
offers services to the Province in both official languages.
The RHC can accommodate a total of 150 patients thanks to
its qualified personnel.
Senior
citizens nursing care
Restigouche county has three recognized nursing homes for
seniors that offer 24 hour nursing care, namely: the Campbellton
Nursing Home in Campbellton, the Restigouche Senior
Citizens Home in Dalhousie and "Foyer Mgr. Morneault"
in Saint-Quentin. Also, many other residential services
are offered throughout the region.

Other
Health Care
The Department of Family and Community Services maintains
three offices in the region, in Kedgwick, Campbellton and
Belledune (Jacquet River), where they offer various services
related to family and community social services as well as
public health.
Ambulance
services established in Campbellton, Dalhousie, Saint-Quentin
and Belledune assure adequate transportation service in
case of emergency. A volunteer service is also available
and offered by the Saint John Ambulance.
Police
protection
Restigouche county is under the care of the Royal Canadian
Mounted (RCMP) and has five detachments in the region:

In case
of emergency, 9-1-1 services are also available throughout
the region.
Fire
protection
All incorporated municipalities in the county and a few
rural areas have their own fire protection services.

Restigouche county has an adequate network of financial
institutions: 9 chartered bank branches and 11 credit unions.

offering credit services and placement options can also
be found within the region.

Entertainment
Through
its cultural wealth and its quality of life, Restigouche
offers many large scale cultural events.
The
region is rich in history which is aptly recreated by museums,
for instance, the Kedgwick Forestry Museum, the Restigouche
Regional Museum in Dalhousie, the National Historic
Park documenting the "Battle of the Ristigouche"
as well as the Heritage Museum in Balmoral. Library
services are offered in many municipalities.
For
art lovers and artists alike, the Restigouche Gallery
in Campbellton is a national center for art exhibitions.
For
theatre and music enthusiasts the "Théâtre
Populaire d'Acadie", Theatre New Brunswick
and "les Jeunesses musicales du Canada"
all offer regular tour dates in the region. Lets also mention
the Baie des Chaleurs Chamber Music Festival that
takes place every year in July.
Many
communities in the region organize festivals and carnivals
providing inhabitants of the region with occasions to celebrate
and have fun.
One
such occasion to celebrate and have fun will undoubtedly
be the upcoming 2003 Bathurst-Campbellton Canada Winter
Games. The first Canada Games were held in 1967 in Québec
City and were deemed an outstanding success. Since then,
the Canada Games have been held at two-year intervals, alternating
between Winter and Summer Games. On February 22nd, 2003
at the Bathurst KC Irving Centre, the ceremonial torch will
be ignited once again to mark the commencement of the 2003
Bathurst-Campbellton Canada Winter Games.

The
Closing Ceremonies will be held on March 8th, 2003 at the
Campbellton Memorial Civic Centre. The Cities of Bathurst
and Campbellton and surrounding communities will host the
country's premiere multi-sport event from February 22nd
to March 8th, 2003. Over 3, 200 Athletes from Canada's 10
provinces and 3 territories will compete in 21 different
